Sun, sea breezes, sand, smell of ozone, azure water, crystal dazzling water fountains, sun terraces, deck chairs, chutes, diving boards, paddling pools, colourful patios, cafes, restaurants, dancing, partying, the excited shrieks from kiddies and teenagers, mum and dad leaving cares behind, children relaxing from their studies, the cry of seagulls swooping down from blue skies, new friendships and partners...the list is endless. These centres of paradise surely remain locked in peoples minds.
We’ll forget about the storms, the wind, the cold water - the lidos brought about togetherness, happiness and fun.
Undoubtedly - in those days, following the dark days of war - the drenching, buffeting, and the chilliness of the water were of least importance - they all probably added to the fun!
Conversations go ...
“I remember when...” “I remember how”. .. “I remember what...” I remember why...” and
“I remember WHO...”
Do you remember the swimming galas, the diving displays, the aqua shows? ...and more seriously, the National and International Swimming and Diving events, when, to be able to find an empty seat was a feat in itself.
Most of these fantastic lidos were equipped with the finest facilities in order to stage these national events. There are some lidos that have survived time - (data is continually being added ) Some famous indoor pools that have hosted many events and hold memories, sadly haven’t survived time - (data is continually being added) but despite the open grass, the apartment blocks, housing estates, shopping arcades or dereliction, these beautiful lidos may have disappeared, but the mind can penetrate through the bricks and mortar, fill the spaces, rebuild the dereliction and still SEE these lidos in all their glory. The memories are cemented. AGJ
